Have you ever seen a picture, photograph, painting and get an epiphany? Revelation?? The voice of God??? I have recently and it was a painting I’ve looked at for the last two years… every.single.day.
While doing our family focus one year, my husband explained that he really felt our family verse needed to be Proverbs 3:5 (and 6). With that, he asked if I could create something in our home with that verse. I said yes and a year of wasted time and lazy excuses later, I finished it all. Since then, this verse has grabbed my heart in so many different situations, especially recently. As a mom in an information-focused society, this verse has spoken even louder to my heart and mind in times of dire distress.
Whether you are a mother or a father, you have those moments when something happens and knowledge kicks in with the fever and mysterious rash child, science project using beans child and the “terrific twos” child. We are daily bombarded with situations that require us to come up with a remedy to a problem with our kids. This is what we as parents do! So, with the help of friends, books and yeah right… let’s just say it…GOOGLE!!!… we attack these problems/issues and feel glad with the solution we’ve found, which may honestly only last until we find a better solution (… on google).
But what if this verse- this trusting- was as prevalent on our minds as it has been before my eyes for the last two years? Everyday with every turn? On the tips of our actions? How would that change us and the way we move? I was, am and feel this will always be God’s challenge to me through this verse and the verse that follows (Proverbs 3:6 “In all of your ways, acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.”) I often trust the internet to tell me how to get my baby to sleep through the night, to tell me how to cope with a vivacious 2 year old who thinks he’s the oldest and when to make certain developmental transitions. Yet, what I’ve found in doing what I thought was my duty as a mom (to be knowledgeable and find a solution) has driven me in circles at best, frustrated and back where I began.
As parents, God has gifted us with our children whom we are to steward for the building of His Kingdom. What I desire for all of us to realize is how powerful trusting Him can be for us, our marriage, our homes, our children. What if, instead of immediately calling the pediatric nurse line, we took a moment and prayed to God FIRST concerning that fever and rash? What if, instead of researching best sleep practices all day and night, we intentionally and consistently prayed the blood of Jesus over our children and verses like Proverbs 3:24 – “When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet..” And Psalms 4:8 – “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.” What if, instead of handling the varied personalities of our children to the best (and often worst) of OUR knowledge/experience and information, we prayed daily for them, asking God to show us who they are and the purpose for which they were made that way? I mean… He DID say He knew them before they were formed in our wombs so… the manufacturer may have some ideas on how to fix some foreign parts *wink*.
I admonish you, trust in the Lord with your actions (from your kids to your marriage or singleness to EVERYTHING) and do NOT lean on what you know or what you could know. Recognize God/reach out to Him/give Him priority in every situation you are faced with as a parent (and other roles) and watch Him keep His promise… He will direct your paths.
